Postgraduate School of Archaeology

Overview

Based in Matera, the University of Basilicata's Postgraduate School of Archaeology was established in academic year 2010-11 following the reorganisation of the original Specialisation School in Archaeology, which had by that time been operational for over two decades.

Offering two curricula (Classical Archaeology, and Late Antique and Medieval Archaeology), the School aims at providing students with comprehensive specialist education and training in the field of archaeology, its methodology and techniques, as well as equipping them with technical skills in preservation, protection, and promotion of archaeological heritage.

The School operates a numerus clausus admission policy.

Academic Staff is composed of tenured professors and researchers at the University's Departments and Schools, as well as temporary lecturers and professors.

Besides attending lectures and seminars, students are required to take part in laboratory-based practicals, fieldtrips and fieldwork, in relation to the School's site excavation and surveying projects.

The Postgraduate Degree in Archaeology is a recognized academic qualification for careers in rescue archaeology, as well as for employment in the public sector.

All research projects, as well as events and initiatives, are carried out and planned by the School in collaboration with the Archaeological Heritage Office of Basilicata and a number of institutions, both Italian and foreign.
