DICEM - Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures, Environment, and Cultural Heritage



About the Department

DiCEM - the Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures, Environment, and Cultural Heritage is the result of a project that aims at developing innovative interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of education and research, based on the integration of a variety of subject areas encompassing architecture, cultural heritage, landscape planning, and tourism.

Through its range of academic, teaching and research activities, the Department aims at:

  • developing research and educational initiatives that are deeply rooted in the local geographical context;
  • outlining internationalisation strategies relevant to higher education;
  • highlighting the importance of both national and international joint research groups in order to promote the most effective collaboration to carry out innovative actions that best interpret both European and Mediterranean cultures.


Studying at DiCEM

Based in the city of Matera, the Department replaced the pre-existing Faculties of Architecture and Humanities in organising and offering several graduate and undergraduate programmes. The Department has also recently developed a new undergraduate programme in Landscape, Environment, Urban Green Spaces.

An ongoing partnership agreement with the University of Florence allows students of the Department's Cultural Heritage Studies undergraduate programme to further their academic education in the subject areas relevant to their curriculum by carrying out a study period at that University and being awarded part of the university credits required by the programme.

The Department is fully equipped with facilities for teaching and research activities.

Postgraduate academic and research programmes include a PhD programme in Cities and Landscapes: Architecture, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, History and Resources, as well as programmes offered by the Postgraduate School of Archaeology, which was established in academic year 2010-11 following the reorganisation of the original Specialisation School in Archaeology.

It also offers both first- and second-level postgraduate qualification programmes.

UNESCO Chair

In 2017, the Department promoted - in partnership with the Postgraduate School of Archaeology, the establishment of a UNESCO Chair on Mediterranean Cultural Landscapes and Communities of Knowledge at the University of Basilicata. 
Based at the University's Matera Campus, the Chair aims at promoting an integrated system of research, training, information, and documentation on the safeguarding of cultural landscapes in the Mediterranean, as well as facilitating active collaboration between higher education and research institutions in Italy, Europe, and other regions in the world. 

The specific objectives of the Chair, as stated in the establishment agreement, are to:

  • give visibility to Mediterranean cultural landscapes, devising strategies for environmental sustainability and cultural heritage preservation, promoting cultural diversity and biodiversity; 
  • encourage and support local governments in the development and implementation of Mediterranean landscape management policies;
  • advocate policies related to cultural landscapes, focusing on knowledge and respectful of local communities within cultural landscapes;
  • provide access to, transfer, growth, and exchange of knowledge on cultural landscapes and cultural heritage through international workshops, seminars, lectures, and open data analysis;
  • contribute to the creation of a Permanent Observatory for the management of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera"; 
  • enhance networking with other research institutions in the Mediterranean region.
