I misteri della Terra con "Geoscuola", di Unibas e Shell

Si chiama "Geoscuola", ed è il progetto organizzato dal dipartimento di Scienze dell'Università della Basilicata e sostenuto da Shell Italia E&P, che ha portato da marzo a Maggio in 12 scuole lucane (25 classi e 450 studenti) i misteri e le meraviglie della Terra, dai vulcani ai fossili, attraverso lezioni frontali, video, modelli ed escursioni. Il lavoro si è svolto in alcune scuole secondarie di primo grado della Val d’Agri: Calvello, Moliterno, Grumento Nova, Tramutola, Paterno, Spinoso, Sarconi, Montemurro, Marsico Nuovo, Viggiano e Marsicovetere. L'organizzazione è stata coordinata dai docenti del dipartimento di Scienze dell'Unibas, con la didattica - ovvero la presenza nelle scuole - affidata ai neo laureati nei corsi in Scienze Geologiche dell'Ateneo lucano, suddivisi in due gruppi di quattro componenti ognuno (e dai docenti, per quanto concerne le escursioni, fra cui la visita in un geosito della Basilicata).
Il progetto si è sviluppato in cinque lezioni e in un’escursione geologica a Sasso di Castalda (Potenza), area di rilevanza nazionale da questo punto di vista. Durante i corsi gli alunni hanno potuto assistere a riconoscimenti macroscopici di campioni di roccia e fossili derivanti da specifici geositi dell’Appennino Lucano. I docenti, in particolare, hanno anche affrontato temi specifici: l’origine dell’universo e la struttura della Terra, i terremoti, i vulcani, i fossili e gli idrocarburi, e i geositi. Obiettivo dell'escursione geologica è stato quello di applicare, in forma di gioco educativo, le nozioni apprese durante le lezioni di didattica di tipo frontale e pratico (ad esempio, il riconoscimento delle principali formazioni rocciose affioranti, un'esercitazione grafica e la riproduzione di alcune ‘forme’ geologiche osservabili in panoramica). Alla fine del ciclo d’incontri, il livello di apprendimento è stato verificato con modalità di tipo ludico-competitivo, suddividendo gli studenti in squadre con l’assegnazione di un punteggio e relativa premiazione finale (GeoQuiz).
"Geoscuola è un progetto importante per gli studenti della Basilicata e il sostegno di Shell al programma – ha dichiarato Tom Kjolberg, Direttore Commerciale di Shell Italia E&P – fa parte di una fattiva collaborazione che Shell ha da diversi anni con l’Università degli Studi della Basilicata per supportare la formazione dei giovani della Basilicata”. Il progetto Geoscuola, hanno invece spiegato i docenti dell'Unibas, "rappresenta un'iniziativa di tipo didattico che prevede la divulgazione delle Geoscienze e del significato dei Geositi presso alcune scuole medie della Val d’Agri, Basilicata. L’organizzazione didattica e scientifica del progetto è coordinata dai docenti del Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Università degli Studi della Basilicata. L’attività didattica viene espletata da giovani neo laureati del Corso di Laurea in Scienze Geologiche. Il progetto è articolato in alcune lezioni didattiche di tipo frontale con verifiche in forma di quiz e giochi a squadre. Gli argomenti trattati vertono su nozioni generali inerenti la Geologia di Base e i Geositi, attraverso l'utilizzo di filmati audiovisivi e coadiuvate da esercitazioni sul riconoscimento macroscopico di campioni di roccia e fossili derivanti da specifici Geositi dell’Appennino Lucano. Il programma didattico si è concluso con un’escursione geologica nel Geosito di Sasso di Castalda, Le prime lezioni sono state svolte a partire dalla seconda settimana di marzo".
The G e o S c u o l a Project
an educational project between Shell Italy E&P and Basilicata University
GeoScuola is an educational project aimed to disclose the Geosciences and Geosites among some of the secondary schools of Val d’Agri, Basilicata. It started on March 2014 and it will end on late May 2014.
Professors of the Department of Science of the University of Basilicata, who are responsible of the scientific contents and the educational scheduling of the project, coordinate the organization of the course. The project consists of a series of lectures and practical exercises based on some of the fundamental aspects of the Geosciences. Importantly: young, Earth-Science MSc graduate students from the Basilicata University carry out the lessons.
GeoScuola inlcudes six educational meetings with the students of the first, second and third year of each secondary schools. Students are involved through a series of lectures, educational movies, practice games and trainings on basic topics of the Earth Sciences, including: identification of basic types of rocks, understanding the solid Earth system (i.e., plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes), distinguish the main types of fossil organisms, etc.
The lectures are performed as competitions among groups of students, who acquire a rating during the various lectures. The conclusive meeting is an excursion in the town of Sasso di Castalda where one of the best Geosite of central Basilicata is naturally exposed. Here, a series of ‘geological’ pathways going into and out the ancient down-town of the village are followed by the students, through a series of panoramic and close-up stops focused on the exposed rocks and their physical features (i.e., stratification, tectonic structure, fossil content, etc.).
The end of the field trip is also the conclusion of the entire course. The final award is made through the delivery of prizes and gadgets (i.e., bags, t-shirt, …) provided by Shell Italy E&P, and with a conclusive party kindly organized by the mayor of Sasso di Castalda.
Report/feedback on the first activities from the GeoScuola Project

12 schools, 25 classes and 450 students from over 10 secondary schools of Basilicata. This is the mid-term target of the Geoscuola educational project, an initiative carried out from the Basilicata University and Shell E&P Italy in the Agri Valley, area of energy resources and cultural landscapes of international relevance.
7 student fellows of the Basilicata University, who teach the basics of Earth Sciences; 25-years-old, recently-graduated students with MSc-thesis in Geology and Geophysics, and with experience in the field of scientific disclosure.
3 months (from March to May 2014) it is the time span in order to play 5 lessons (two-hours-long each) to the 25 classes involved. Topics range from the origin of the Universe, to why volcanoes do form(?) and the mechanism of the earthquakes (among others). At the end of each lecture, a ‘Geoquiz’ is proposed to the young students, aimed to evaluate their learning level and the teaching quality. At the end of the lectures, the visit of the geosite represents a chance to discover an unique place. Sasso di Castalda exhibits geologic beauties, which are particularly well exposed along an easy and full-safety pathway across the village. Students will be involved in a series of exercises on topographic map analysis, the use of the compass, and the understanding of the landscape and its forms.
